What is Acupuncture? Acupuncture, one aspect of Traditional Chinese Medicine, is among the oldest healing practices in the world. There is evidence of its use dating back to over 4,000 years ago. The goal is to restore and maintain health through the stimulation of specific points on the body using sterile, disposable, one-time-use-only needles. Acupuncture coupled with herbal formulas, is a truly holistic form of healthcare, relieving symptoms, as well as addressing the root cause of the problem. It restores the equilibrium between the human body, its organ systems and the influences of the outside world including bacteria, virus, and the infinite stresses that we encounter. Commenting on the relative safety of acupuncture compared with other treatments, the National Institute of Health,(NIH) consensus panel stated that "adverse side effects of acupuncture are extremely low and often lower than conventional treatments." They also stated: "the incidence of adverse effects is substantially lower than that of many drugs or other accepted medical procedures used for the same condition. For example, musculoskeletal conditions, such as fibromyalgia, myofascial pain, and tennis elbow... are conditions for which acupuncture may be beneficial. These painful conditions are often treated with, among other things, anti-inflammatory medications (aspirin, ibuprofen, etc.) or with steroid injections. Both medical interventions have a potential for deleterious side effects but are still widely used and are considered acceptable treatments."
